Anna's Family Kitchen was inspired by my love of food and desire to feed my family healthy, home cooked wholesome meals that are beautifully presented and appealing but don’t require hours of prep in the kitchen.

Cottage Pie

Cottage pie.  Delicious, hearty and healthy. We also make a vegetarian version for the 14 year old veggie in the family! The recipe below is for a family sized (4-6 people) pie but it’s also great to make individual pies which can be frozen.⠀

Cooking: 1-1/2 hours

800g lean beef mince (or Quorn mince)⠀
2 onions chopped⠀
3 garlic cloves crushed⠀
2 carrots grated⠀
50g tomato purée⠀
200ml red wine⠀
1 tbsp flour⠀
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce⠀
600ml beef stock (or veg stock if making a veggie version)⠀
2 bay leaves⠀
Mashed potato to top⠀
100g Frozen Peas (optional)⠀

Break up and colour the mince in a large casserole before adding the onion.⠀

Sauté for 10 minutes before adding the wine. Let it reduce then add all the remaining ingredients apart from the peas.⠀

Either simmer for 1 1/2 on a low heat or put in a slow cooker or low oven for 3-6 hours. ⠀

If making the Quorn version, the mince takes far less time to cook. Sweat the onion then add the Quorn followed by all other ingredients and simmer for 30 minutes.⠀

Let the meat cool slightly before spooning into an ovenproof dish. If you want an extra portion of your 5 a day add a layer or frozen peas before topping with the mashed potato.⠀

Put in an oven at 180 for 45 minutes.
