Tarka Dal (Daal, Dhal)

Tarka Dal. A hug in a bowl! Cheap to make, Dal, Daal, Dhal (however you choose to spell it!) is hearty, healthy and very very tasty! I’ve been working on this recipe for a while as I wanted to do it justice!! Serve with naan or chapattis or do what I have done here as a simple alternative – warm some tortilla wraps in a pan or oven, stroke with a knob of butter and sprinkle with nigella seeds. Ta da! Sort of chapatis!

INGREDIENTS

250g Yellow split pea lentils
1 onion chopped
6 garlic cloves peeled and thinly sliced
5 small plum tomatoes quartered
1/2 tsp Turmeric
1 tsp ground Cumin
1 tsp Coriander
10cm Ginger finely chopped
1 tsp Garam Masala
2 whole chillis, sliced down the middle but left whole
Fresh coriander leaves to serve

In a pan cover the split peas with 1 litre water. Add 1/2 tsp salt, bring to the boil and simmer for 40 minutes.

In a large frying pan add a lug of oil, a knob of butter and the garlic. Once the garlic starts to take on colour add the onions.

Once softened add all the spices (apart from the Garam Masala), the chillis, ginger and tomatoes.

Add the lentils to the onion/garlic/spice mix and stir. Add more liquid if the Dal looks too dry.

Add the Garam Masala.

Simmer for a couple of minutes, throw over the coriander leaves and serve with the chapatis and rice if you like.
